Leadership Training

Leadership Mountain Brook is a highly visible leadership building class coordinated by
  • the City of Mountain Brook Mayor’s office,
  • the Mountain Brook Chamber of Commerce,
  • and Mountain Brook High School.
This extraordinary partnership will offer students the opportunity to develop leadership skills, gain knowledge of business management, city government, and community service, and to apply these skills within the Mountain Brook area. Each student will have a personal mentor and participate in a variety of activities planned to give students a thorough overview of the opportunities available in business, government, and community service. These skills will transfer easily into college and adult life and help students become the leaders of tomorrow.

Applied business and leadership development
Through Participation in Local Business, Government, Community Service

I hope this sounds interesting to you! The activities planned for this class include important life skills, and a lot of active, hands on fun. Do you see yourself as a leader? Would you like to develop leadership skills? Are you curious as to what goes on behind the scenes of a city or what it takes to own and operate a business? Would you like the opportunity to ask questions and get the real scoop from professionals? Would you like to leave school early every day and take a class outside of MBHS? If you answered yes to these questions, maybe this class is for you!

Students selected to participate in LMB, will earn one high school credit and a grade which will be recorded on the report card/transcript. There will be opportunities for earning service hours above the class required hours, if a student so desires. This class will also count toward earning the distinction of Career Tech/Business Completer, a State Department of Education recognition and one that is acknowledged by colleges. Students who earn this distinction are honored at Awards Day and may wear recognition cords at graduation.

This class, like all Career Focus classes, does require that participants be able to leave MBHS by the end of sixth period.  Career Focus classes meet for a total of five hours each week, usually in time frames of two to three hours, several days each week. Occasionally some events will take place on a week-end. On the days that class does not meet, students are free to leave the MBHS campus following their last scheduled class. Career Focus extends beyond the usual 3:20 end of school time on several days each week. Therefore, students who participate in after school activities are not able to also participate in Career Focus classes. Career Focus students must provide personal transportation to the class site and abide by a Code of Conduct. All Career Focus classes are approved by the Board of Education and are coordinated by Margaret Clark, Coordinator. Career Focus classes are designed to be active, hands-on classes where students learn by doing. LMB will certainly meet this goal.

In order to give each student the maximum learning opportunities, only a small number of students will be selected to participate in this class.

In addition, the activities will be excellent college resume builders and will provide recent examples to share on college interviews.
